In a significant turn of events, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren is under scrutiny by the Enforcement Directorate regarding an alleged money laundering case. Sources within his Jharkhand Mukti Morcha Party have revealed that if he faces arrest, his wife, Kalpana Soren, may step into his role. Mr. Soren is expected to be questioned by the agency, and there are concerns about a possible arrest following the recording of his statement.
During a meeting with MLAs of the ruling alliance, sources suggest that Mr. Soren made an announcement about this potential succession plan. The MLAs have reportedly expressed their full support for the Chief Minister, emphasizing the importance of preserving the government during this critical period.
However, legal challenges may arise in Mrs. Soren assuming the Chief Minister’s position. Constitutional provisions state that if the Assembly’s term expires in less than a year, by-polls cannot be conducted. Given that the Jharkhand Assembly election is scheduled for November this year, it could pose difficulties for Kalpana Soren to become an MLA.
To address this, sources indicate that legal opinions may be sought or an alternative candidate might be considered for the top post if required. The situation is evolving, and decisions will be made based on the legal framework and the need to maintain stability in the government.
The alleged ₹600-crore land scam that Mr. Soren is linked to involves a massive racket aimed at changing the ownership of government land, subsequently selling it to builders, as per the claims made by the Enforcement Directorate. So far, the agency has arrested 14 individuals in connection with the case, including a 2011-batch IAS officer, Chhavi Ranjan, who served in key positions within the state Social Welfare Department and as the deputy commissioner of Ranchi.
Mr. Soren has vehemently asserted that he is the target of a vast conspiracy. The unfolding situation underscores the complex interplay of political and legal dynamics in Jharkhand, with the potential for significant ramifications on the state’s leadership and governance.
