In a remarkable achievement, the Ministry of Culture’s tableau themed ‘Bharat: Mother of Democracy’ has clinched the first prize at the 75th Republic Day parade. The prestigious award was announced by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), recognizing the tableau’s outstanding representation of Bharat’s cultural heritage.
The Culture Ministry expressed pride in the accomplishment, stating that the tableau, a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, mesmerized spectators with its use of the anamorphic technique. This technique, seamlessly integrated into the presentation, added a contemporary touch, reflecting the dynamism of Bharat culture while showcasing its rich heritage.
The Republic Day tableau showcased replicas of B R Ambedkar handing over the Constitution to the country’s first president, Rajendra Prasad, and featured ancient symbols that championed democratic ideals. Titled ‘Bharat: Mother of Democracy,’ the tableau rolled down Kartavya Path during the ceremonial parade, mounted on two tractors.
The description of the tableau emphasized the ancient roots of democracy in Bharat, citing the Rigveda’s timeless verse, “Ekam Sad Vipra Bahudha Vadanti,” highlighting the foundational principle of unity in diversity. Sanskrit texts, including Panini’s Ashtadhyayi and Buddhist canonical works, were credited with laying the groundwork for democratic ideals.
The tableau delved into the historical references from the 5th century to the 1st millennium BCE, illustrating the active practice of people choosing their leaders. Inscriptions by historical figures and the pillar of Samudragupta affirmed the prevalence of democratic principles during Bharat’s golden Gupta era.
Exploring the nuances of governance, the tableau showcased a multi-layered system called Shreni Sangha, exemplified in the town of Uthiramerur in southern Bharat. The historical inscriptions detailed eligibility criteria for selecting candidates and methods to ensure fair elections, showcasing India’s rich tapestry of democratic traditions.
The tableau was presented uniquely through two trailers and two tractors, each depicting different historical periods and symbols. The first tractor portrayed the Vedic Period, while its trailer housed Buddha and Jain sages promoting dialogue. The second tractor showed the Indian Constitution being handed over to the first president by Dr. B R Ambedkar, with its trailer displaying democratic symbols like mahajanpadas, the chariot of Humpy, Constituent Assembly, and elections through curved LED displays.
This achievement not only highlights the Ministry of Culture’s commitment to preserving Bharat’s diverse cultural tapestry but also showcases the nation’s historical contributions to democratic principles.
