The Prosecutor General of Maldives, Hussain Shameem, has been reported injured after a targeted attack on a street in Male City, as revealed by local media on Wednesday. The incident was promptly reported to authorities on Wednesday morning, with Shameem currently undergoing treatment at ADK Hospital in the country. Notably, preliminary findings suggest that the attack did not involve the use of a sharp-edged weapon, according to a police spokesperson.
Hussain Shameem was appointed to the position by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) government, which was previously in power. Even after Mohamed Muizzu’s victory in the presidential runoff held in September last year, Shameem continued in his role. The attack on him is being regarded as “pre-meditated and well-planned,” as stated by the MDP in a released statement. The party emphasizes the severity of an attack on an individual holding a constitutionally appointed position within the state, stressing that it poses a threat to the entire system.
The Maldivian Democratic Party’s statement expresses deep concern over the nature of the attack, describing it as a dangerous signal amid the country’s political landscape. Given the incident’s occurrence on the street, the MDP asserts that it poses a threat to individuals in constitutionally significant positions who aim to carry out essential duties within the criminal justice system. The Maldives Police are actively investigating the attack, according to the statement cited by news agency ANI.
The assault on Prosecutor General Shameem comes against the backdrop of heightened political turmoil in the Maldives. Just two days prior, visuals of Members of Parliament exchanging blows on the Parliament floor circulated widely on social media, sparking criticism. The videos depicted a physical altercation between Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP Isa and ruling Peoples’ National Congress (PNC) MP Abdullah Shaheem Abdul Hakeem. The incident led to injuries, with a parliamentarian reportedly being transported to an ambulance for medical attention.
In response to the recent events, opposition parties in the Maldives have reportedly prepared an impeachment motion against President Muizzu. The president has already been entangled in controversy over strained relations with India, particularly following disparaging social media posts against Prime Minister Narendra Modi by three now-suspended ministers in his government. The evolving political situation in the Maldives raises concerns about the stability of the government and the potential impact on diplomatic ties with neighboring countries.
