In a significant move towards expanding the reach of Bharat’s mobile-based payment system, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) was formally launched at the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris. The event took place during the Republic Day reception held in France, showcasing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of taking UPI global.
PM Modi, lauding the launch, expressed his enthusiasm on social media, stating, “Great to see this–it marks a significant step towards taking UPI global. This is a wonderful example of encouraging digital payments and fostering stronger ties.”
Bharat-France Collaboration on UPI Implementation
The formal launch was a result of the collaboration between Bharat and France, as announced during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to France in July the previous year. The joint statement highlighted the commitment to nurturing a thriving digital ecosystem and building collaborations for the benefit of their citizens in the digital century.
NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) and France’s Lyra Collect played a pivotal role in executing an agreement to implement the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) in France and Europe. This strategic partnership aims to empower citizens with seamless digital payment options and enhance the overall digital infrastructure.
Tourists’ Convenience and Social Transformation
During his address to the Bharat community in Paris, PM Modi emphasized the transformative impact of digital platforms like UPI in Bharat. He announced that Bharat tourists in France could now make payments in rupees through the UPI payment mechanism, beginning at the Eiffel Tower.
The implementation of UPI in France holds practical significance, making it easier for Bharat tourists to engage in transactions using their home currency. PM Modi encouraged the Bharat community to embrace and promote this initiative, marking a collaborative effort in the global expansion of UPI.
Macron’s Experience and Continued Collaboration
French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent visit to India further strengthened the collaboration between the two nations. During their interaction at a tea stall in Jaipur, Macron used UPI for making payments. This demonstrated the practical application and user-friendly nature of the UPI system on a global scale.
The launch at the Eiffel Tower reflects not only a technological milestone but also the diplomatic ties and commitment of India and France towards fostering innovation and digital cooperation. The joint efforts of NPCI International Payments Limited and Lyra Collect mark a step forward in creating a more connected and digital future for both nations.
