Uttarakhand Cabinet Approves UCC Bill
In a significant development, the Uttarakhand Cabinet has approved the draft Uniform Civil Code (UCC), and the government is set to table the UCC Bill on Monday during the special four-day session of the Assembly. If implemented, Uttarakhand will become the first state post-Independence to adopt the UCC, which has been operational in Goa since the Portuguese rule.
The UCC aims to establish uniform civil laws for all communities in the state, disregarding caste and religion. It will provide a legal framework for uniform marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance laws. The BJP, fulfilling its promise made before the 2022 Assembly polls, views this as a significant move. The implementation in Uttarakhand could serve as a template for a national UCC, with Assam and Gujarat also expressing interest.
