Jharkhand’s political landscape is witnessing a crucial turn as Champai Soren, the newly appointed Chief Minister, is set to undergo a floor test at 11 am today. The test aims to determine if he commands the majority in the assembly following the resignation and subsequent arrest of his predecessor, Hemant Soren, by the Enforcement Directorate last week.
Champai Soren assumed the top post after his predecessor’s resignation, and the ruling JMM-led alliance, keen on safeguarding its legislators from poaching attempts, had sequestered its MLAs in a Hyderabad resort. However, the alliance brought back its leaders to Ranchi on Sunday, preparing for the imminent floor test.
The JMM, confident in its position, claims the floor test is merely a formality, asserting the support of 47 MLAs. Manoj Pandey from JMM stated, “The spirit of the opposition is already low seeing the numbers and the unity of the INDIA alliance. The figure can also cross 48. Our party, our alliance is united.”
On the other hand, the BJP challenges the coalition’s confidence, with spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo expressing concern about the state’s image. He remarked, “Whatever the result may be of the floor test, Jharkhand has lost.” Deo criticized the previous government’s handling of Hemant Soren’s arrest and emphasized the state’s humiliation on a national and international scale.
Jharkhand’s leader of the opposition, Amar Kumari Bauri, criticized the previous state government for prioritizing corruption over promises. Bauri expressed hope that Champai Soren’s administration would fulfill the commitments for which they were elected.
The JMM-led alliance MLAs, who were in Hyderabad for the past three days, returned to Ranchi on Sunday, exuding confidence in winning the trust vote. They claimed the support of 48 to 50 legislators, including some BJP MLAs, according to JMM lawmaker Mithilesh Thakur.
Champai Soren formed the government on Friday amid allegations of a delayed response from the governor. He asserts the support of 47 MLAs in the 81-member Jharkhand assembly. The BJP-led NDA has 29 MLAs, including BJP’s 26 MLAs and AJSU’s three.
Hemant Soren, the former chief minister, will attend the voting process after being permitted to leave jail by a special court in Ranchi on Saturday. However, reports suggest that some JMM MLAs, not in favor of Champai Soren, may choose not to participate in the floor test. Despite internal differences, the JMM leadership remains confident of maintaining unity within the coalition government.
