Japanese and the US forces have for the first time named China a hypothetical enemy in a joint command post exercise. The US military and the Japanese Self-Defense Forces engaged in joint exercise last week amid the rising concerns over China’s invasion of the self-ruled island of Taiwan which Beijing claims as its own.
According to multiple reports, the computer simulation exercise, which started on February 1, 2024 and is about to go on till February 8, 2024 made an emergency in Taiwan.
William Burns, the director of the US Central Intelligence Agency, stated in February last year that Chinese President Xi Jinping had instructed his country’s military to be ready to invade Taiwan by 2027.
“Actual troops are expected to perform a live demonstration of the “Keen Sword” drill around 2025 to verify its success” media reports quoted sources.
Notably, over the past year-and-a-half, two rounds of war games have been staged by China around Taiwan which can possibly raise fears of a conflict which could drag in the US and its allies.
The United States and Japan used to use maps that were different from the actual country topography to prevent backlash if the plan was leaked.
At a news conference on January 25, 2024, Gen. Yoshihide Yoshida, chief of the Japanese Defense Ministry’s Joint Staff, said that the exercise didn’t envision a particular country or region.
