The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) recently concluded four successful flight trials of the High-speed Expendable Aerial Target (HEAT) named ‘ABHYAS’. These trials took place at the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha, between January 30 and February 2. ‘ABHYAS’ underwent rigorous testing, validating various parameters crucial for its performance, including endurance, speed, manoeuvrability, altitude, and range.
Developed by DRDO’s Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), ‘ABHYAS’ stands out for its efficiency and cost-effectiveness compared to imported alternatives. It requires minimal logistical support, making it an attractive option for defence applications.
One of the key features of ‘ABHYAS’ is its autonomous flying capability, facilitated by an indigenous autopilot system developed by ADE. This capability ensures the target can simulate realistic threat scenarios, aiding in the practice of weapon systems.
During the trials, ‘ABHYAS’ was subjected to four different mission objectives, all of which were successfully accomplished. These objectives included safe booster release, launcher clearance, and achieving the required launch velocity. The trials demonstrated the target’s reliability and effectiveness in meeting operational requirements.
Equipped with radar cross-section technology and visual and infrared augmentation systems, ‘ABHYAS’ provides essential features necessary for weapon practice. Additionally, it incorporates a Ground Control System operated through a laptop, enabling seamless integration, pre-flight checks, real-time data recording, and post-flight analysis.
Manufactured with contributions from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Defence, ‘ABHYAS’ is now ready for production. Its successful development marks a significant milestone in India’s indigenous defence capabilities and opens up possibilities for export to friendly nations.
In conclusion, the successful flight trials of ‘ABHYAS’ underscore DRDO’s commitment to developing advanced defence technologies that meet the nation’s security needs while also offering export potential. With its proven performance and cost-effectiveness, ‘ABHYAS’ emerges as a promising addition to Bharat’s defence arsenal.
