In a tragic incident that has shocked the community, 28-year-old Gurjit Singh, hailing from Punjab, Bharat, was found murdered outside his residence in Dunedin, New Zealand. The young man, who had moved to New Zealand for work opportunities, was discovered dead with multiple stab wounds last week.

Gurjit’s father, Nishan Singh, had sold family land in Punjab to finance his son’s journey to New Zealand, where Gurjit was employed as a technician with the telecom company Chorus. The 28-year-old had been eagerly anticipating the arrival of his wife in New Zealand and had plans to explore the country with her, including visiting popular destinations like Queenstown.

The suspect, a 33-year-old individual whose identity hasn’t been disclosed, has been apprehended by authorities in connection with Gurjit Singh’s murder. They are set to appear in the Dunedin District Court to face charges related to the crime. Police have praised the community’s support during the investigation, with both law enforcement and local Punjabi organizations rallying around the grieving family.

Gurjit Singh’s sudden and violent death has left his family and friends devastated. Described as a “good guy” without any known enemies, Singh had expressed concerns about the security of his home, prompting him to install security cameras. The investigation into his murder involves a team of 25 investigators meticulously piecing together Singh’s movements before his death.

The efforts of the police, supported by the ESR team, have been crucial in progressing the investigation. Detective Croudis emphasized the importance of interviewing family, friends, and colleagues to establish a timeline leading up to the fatal incident. Additionally, inquiries extend to properties and workplaces associated with the suspect.

In response to the tragedy, the Otago Punjabi Foundation Trust has launched a ‘Givealittle page’ to support Singh’s family, recognizing the financial strain caused by his untimely death. Nishan Singh, the grieving father, expressed gratitude for the support received but stressed the importance of achieving justice for his son.

The loss of Gurjit Singh has reverberated through the community, with many expressing shock and sadness at the senseless violence that claimed his life. As investigations continue, authorities are committed to uncovering the truth behind his murder and holding those responsible accountable for their actions.
