In a significant move towards environmental sustainability, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and TotalEnergies have joined forces to tackle methane emissions. This collaboration was announced during the Bharat Energy Week 2024 event in Goa. ONGC, a prominent player in the Bharat energy sector, has committed to reducing its methane emissions by 50% by 2027 and by 80% by 2030, compared to 2020 levels.
TotalEnergies, a global energy company, has developed cutting-edge technology called AUSEA (Airborne Ultralight Spectrometer for Environmental Applications). This pioneering technology, mounted on drones, is capable of accurately detecting and measuring methane and carbon dioxide emissions. By identifying emission sources, AUSEA provides a precise approach to methane emissions reduction, setting a new standard in the industry.
The partnership between ONGC and TotalEnergies is a strategic step towards achieving zero methane emissions by 2038. Under the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC), a global initiative launched at COP28, both companies are committed to combating climate change by reducing methane emissions from their operations.
TotalEnergies’ Chairman and CEO, Patrick Pouyanne, emphasized the industry’s collective ambition to eliminate methane emissions by 2030. By sharing the AUSEA technology with ONGC, TotalEnergies aims to support India’s efforts in reducing methane emissions from its energy assets.
ONGC’s Chairman and CEO, Arun Kumar Singh, expressed enthusiasm for integrating AUSEA technology into their operations. He highlighted ONGC’s commitment to exploring innovative solutions to achieve substantial reductions in methane emissions. By leveraging TotalEnergies’ expertise, ONGC seeks to accelerate its journey towards environmental sustainability.
TotalEnergies has set ambitious targets to reduce methane emissions, aiming for a 50% reduction by 2025 and an 80% reduction by 2030, compared to 2020 levels. With its growing presence in Bharat since 1993, TotalEnergies is committed to supporting the country’s transition to a low-carbon future.
The introduction of AUSEA technology marks a significant milestone in the global energy industry’s efforts to combat climate change. By harnessing innovative solutions and fostering strategic partnerships, companies like ONGC and TotalEnergies are paving the way towards a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future.
