The Common Civil Code (UCC) bill presented by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in the Uttarakhand state assembly, aims to establish uniform marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance laws for all citizens irrespective of their religion.
In a moment of symbolic significance, Dhami entered the assembly with an original copy of the Constitution, which was met with desk-thumping and chants of “Jai Sri Ram” and “Vande Mataram” from the treasury benches.
The bill is now set for assembly debates before potential passage. Once enacted, Uttarakhand will become the first state in post-independence India to adopt the CCC also known as the Uniform Civil Code.
Meanwhile, the opposition protested claiming insufficient time for study, but was assured that it would be amply reviewed. The legislative session was specially convened for the UCC bill’s passage, fulfilling a BJP promise from the 2022 Assembly polls. Other BJP-ruled states, including Gujarat and Assam, express interest in adopting the Uttarakhand UCC model.
