In a recent update on the Haldwani violence in Uttarakhand, authorities have confirmed that four people have been arrested in connection with the unrest. Additionally, investigations have led to the identification of approximately 15-20 individuals involved in the riots. To control the situation, Uttarakhand Police and ten paramilitary forces have been deployed in the Banbhoolpura area.
The violence erupted following clashes on Thursday night triggered by an anti-encroachment drive. Chief Secretary Radha Raturi, DGP Abhinav Kumar, and ADG Law & Order AP Anshuman visited Haldwani on Friday to assess the situation.
Tensions escalated after municipal authorities demolished an ‘illegal’ madrasa and an underground mosque-like structure in the area. District Magistrate Vandana Singh and State ADG Law & Order AP Anshuman confirmed two deaths and over 250 injuries, with three individuals in critical condition.
Moreover, the District Magistrate of Nainital, Vandana, revealed that two deaths occurred in the violence, which she described as pre-planned. She stated that the trouble started when the municipal corporation and police arrived at Malik ka Bagicha. Vandana said the anti-encroachment team was attacked without reason, and the police had to defend themselves. She clarified that the demolished structures were on government land illegally and were removed following proper legal procedures. Vandana mentioned that the rioting began shortly after the demolitions. Police officials, including DGP Abhinav Kumar and ADG AP Anshuman, visited the area with the chief secretary Radha Raturi. Around 15-20 individuals were detained, with four arrests made directly linked to the violence. The police are using CCTV footage to identify more suspects and plan to use the UAPA against the rioters. Additional paramilitary forces were called in, and flag marches were conducted to restore peace in the affected area.
In response to the violence, authorities imposed a curfew under IPC Section 144, with shoot-at-sight orders against rioters and complete shutdown of internet services. Schools and businesses were instructed to remain closed amidst the unrest.
Efforts to Control Violence
During the protests, significant force was used to protect the police station. After dispersing the mob from the station, efforts were made to prevent loss of life or property in the Gandhi Nagar area, where people from various communities reside. However, the mob surrounded the police station, pelting stones and attacking with petrol bombs. Tear gas and water cannons were deployed to safeguard the station and its occupants.
