In a significant move, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have announced a massive ‘Delhi Chalo’ march slated for February 13. Over 200 farmers’ unions are set to participate in this demonstration, aiming to escalate pressure on the central government to address various demands, notably the enactment of a law guaranteeing a minimum support price (MSP) for crops.
Security Measures Tighten Ahead of Protest
Administrative and security measures have been heightened in anticipation of the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march. Authorities have imposed Section 144 in Panchkula, prohibiting processions, demonstrations, and the carrying of weapons. Elaborate arrangements are being made to seal the Punjab-Haryana borders in Ambala, Jind, and Fatehabad districts. The Haryana Police have issued a traffic advisory, urging commuters to limit travel on main roads on February 13 due to anticipated disruptions.
Internet Services Suspended to Maintain Public Order
To prevent the spread of misinformation and maintain public order, mobile internet services and bulk SMS have been suspended in seven Haryana districts. Senior police officials have conducted inspections at border points to assess security arrangements. Concrete barricades and road closures have been implemented at the Shambhu border, while the Ghaggar river bed has been dug up to impede movement.
Traffic Snarls Expected, Farmers Gear Up Despite Deterrents
Massive traffic snarls and disruptions in regular commuting are anticipated, particularly for travellers heading towards Ambala through the Shambhu border. Despite the government’s efforts to deter them, farmers are gearing up for the march, stocking essential supplies and readying their tractor trolleys. Recent meetings between Union ministers and farmer leaders have not deterred the planned ‘Delhi Chalo’ march, underscoring the persistence of farmers’ demands for MSP guarantee and other concessions.
Dialogue Continues Amidst Tensions
In an attempt to address the escalating situation, Union ministers Piyush Goyal, Arjun Munda, and Nityanand Rai are scheduled to arrive in Chandigarh on February 12 for talks with farmer leaders. However, the planned ‘Delhi Chalo’ march remains scheduled, indicating the ongoing tension between farmers and the government over key agricultural policies.
