In the ongoing Assembly session, Bihar’s political landscape witnessed a pivotal moment as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s government faced a trust vote on Monday. This came two weeks after his notable shift from the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) – a coalition involving JD(U), RJD, and Congress – to the NDA bloc.
Prior to the crucial vote, the Assembly addressed and approved a no-confidence motion against Speaker Awadh Bihari Choudhary, securing 125 votes in favor of his removal.
In anticipation of the Monday test, strategic moves were made by various parties. The Congress transported its MLAs to Hyderabad last week, citing concerns about potential ‘poaching.’ Meanwhile, RJD’s MLAs opted to stay together at Tejashwi Yadav’s residence, and BJP’s Nityanand Rai asserted that all 78 BJP MLAs were lodged in a Patna hotel. Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) also accommodated 40 of its MLAs in another hotel in the state capital.
Analyzing the numbers, the NDA government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, currently exudes confidence in securing the trust vote. In the 243-member Bihar Assembly, the magic number for a majority stands at 122. The NDA claims to possess a majority with 128 members supporting the BJP-JD(U) alliance, while the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ strength has dwindled to 114. The unfolding developments set the stage for a critical political outcome in Bihar.
