Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, has called upon the residents of the state to actively register for the newly launched solar rooftop initiative named ‘PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.’ This program, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to illuminate one crore households across the country by providing up to 300 units of free electricity every month. Dhami emphasized the scheme’s dual benefits of reducing electricity bills and promoting the use of solar energy.
The ‘PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana’ is part of the central government’s ambitious rooftop solar project, with a whopping investment of over Rs 75,000 crores. Under this initiative, households will receive significant subsidies and concessional bank loans to install rooftop solar systems. Prime Minister Modi highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring no financial burden on the people, with subsidies directly credited to their bank accounts and easy accessibility through a National Online Portal.
To enhance the scheme’s outreach, Urban Local Bodies and Panchayats will be incentivized to promote rooftop solar systems within their respective jurisdictions. PM Modi stressed that besides reducing power bills, the initiative would generate additional income and employment opportunities, particularly benefiting the youth with technical skills in manufacturing, installation, and maintenance of solar panels.
The benefits envisioned from the solarization drive are substantial, with households expected to save up to Rs 15,000-18,000 crores annually from free solar electricity and surplus electricity sales to distribution companies. Furthermore, the initiative presents opportunities for charging electric vehicles and entrepreneurship for vendors supplying and installing solar systems.
Bharat’s commitment to renewable energy was reiterated, with Union Minister RK Singh highlighting the nation’s progress towards achieving its ambitious targets set at the COP26 summit. Bharat aims to increase non-fossil electricity capacity to 500 GW, generate half of its energy from renewables, reduce emissions by 1 billion tonnes by 2030, and reduce emissions intensity of GDP by 45 per cent. Additionally, the country aims for net-zero emissions by 2070.
Bharat’s transition towards cleaner energy sources aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. With the launch of initiatives like the ‘PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana,’ the nation takes significant strides towards achieving its sustainable development goals while empowering its citizens economically and environmentally.
