Massive traffic jams have engulfed the National Capital Region as farmers march towards Delhi in protest, causing significant disruptions. Responding to the plight of commuters, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud has extended a helping hand to lawyers who may find themselves stranded due to the ongoing farmer protests.
During today’s proceedings, Chief Justice Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, assured lawyers that the court would accommodate them if they face difficulties reaching court premises because of the traffic congestion stemming from the farmers’ ‘Delhi Chalo’ march.
Originating from Punjab, the farmers embarked on their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march with the aim of highlighting their demands, notably including a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) on crops. Despite discussions with two Union ministers, their grievances remain unresolved, prompting the march to proceed.
The protest, organized by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, has garnered support from over 200 farmer unions. The participants plan to converge on Delhi via multiple routes, namely Ambala-Shambhu, Khanauri-Jind, and the Dabwali borders.
Authorities have responded to the anticipated influx of protesters by deploying extensive police and paramilitary personnel. Delhi’s borders, including Singhu, Tikri, and Ghazipur, have been fortified with multi-layered barricades to prevent the farmers from entering the city.
The assurance from the Chief Justice comes as a relief to legal practitioners who may encounter delays or difficulties attending court proceedings amidst the ongoing traffic disruptions. With the situation evolving, stakeholders remain vigilant, hoping for an amicable resolution to the standoff between the farmers and the government.
