Prime Minister Narendra Modi of Bharat and UAE leader Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan have agreed to push forward with the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) despite ongoing tensions stemming from the conflict between Israel and Hamas. The agreement was made during PM Modi’s recent visit to Abu Dhabi, where discussions on the regional conflict dominated talks between the two leaders, according to India’s Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra.
The IMEC corridor, a significant trade route, aims to connect Bharat, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Israel through a ship-to-rail network. This ambitious project is designed not only to facilitate trade and expedite the transportation of goods but also to serve as a strategic move to counter China’s growing influence in the region.
While concerns over the conflict in Gaza and the situation in the Red Sea persist, both Modi and Sheikh Mohammed are committed to advancing economic cooperation. Kwatra emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum in economic ties between the two nations, despite the challenges posed by the regional conflict.
During Modi’s visit, agreements were also reached on a bilateral investment treaty and collaborative efforts in electricity connection and digital infrastructure. These initiatives reflect the strengthening partnership between India and the UAE in various sectors, enhancing economic cooperation and mutual development.
Addressing thousands of Bharatiyas residing in the UAE, Modi hailed the strong ties between the two countries, referring to Sheikh Mohammed as his brother. The visit also marks the inauguration of the first Hindu temple in the UAE, underscoring the cultural and religious exchanges between India and the Emirates.
Following his visit to the UAE, Modi is scheduled to travel to Qatar to meet with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. This visit comes shortly after Qatar’s release of eight former Indian navy personnel who were facing death sentences on espionage charges. Modi’s involvement in securing the release demonstrates the close diplomatic relations between India and Qatar and highlights the importance of bilateral cooperation in addressing shared challenges.
Overall, Modi’s visit to the UAE and upcoming trip to Qatar underscore Bharat’s commitment to deepening economic ties and fostering diplomatic relations with countries in the Middle East region, despite the ongoing conflict and geopolitical complexities.
