Bharat is gearing up to conduct a significant test of its indigenous Submarine Launched Cruise Missile (SLCM) with a striking range of 500 kilometers. The test is scheduled to take place next month from the country’s east coast. This missile, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), marks a crucial advancement in Bharat’s defense capabilities.
The SLCM is set to become a vital component of the Bharatiya Navy’s arsenal, especially for the indigenously manufactured submarines under Project 75 India. With its two variants, the Land Attack Cruise Missile (LACM) and Anti-Ship Cruise Missile (ASCM), the SLCM offers versatile capabilities for both offensive and defensive operations.
Key technologies incorporated into the SLCM include thrust vector control for precise targeting, in-flight wing deployment, and in-flight engine start, ensuring its effectiveness in various operational scenarios. The successful trial conducted in February 2023 validated these capabilities, meeting all mission objectives with a range of 402 kilometers.
Bharatiya industries such as Larsen and Toubro, Godrej, and Sameer are crucial partners of the DRDO in the SLCM program. Their involvement not only supports the development of this missile but also positions them to contribute to future missile projects, strengthening Bharat’s indigenous defense manufacturing capabilities.
In addition to the SLCM, Bharat’s defense forces are poised to enhance their arsenal with the procurement of an 800 km strike range land attack cruise missile. This move reflects the nation’s commitment to bolstering its defense capabilities and maintaining a strategic edge in the region.
The development and deployment of advanced missile systems like the SLCM and the BrahMos supersonic missile underscore Bharat’s growing prowess in defense technology. The BrahMos, capable of striking targets beyond 800 kilometers, has not only bolstered Bharat’s defense but has also achieved success in exports, further enhancing the country’s strategic influence.
Looking ahead, Bharat aims to establish a rocket force comprising cruise missiles alongside short and medium-range ballistic missiles, enhancing its deterrence capabilities. Once fully tested and integrated into the defense forces, Bharat plans to offer its subsonic cruise missiles to friendly foreign nations, further solidifying its position as a key player in the global defense arena.
In summary, Bharat’s upcoming test of the Submarine Launched Cruise Missile represents a significant milestone in its quest for indigenous defense capabilities. With advanced technologies and strategic partnerships, Bharat continues to strengthen its defense posture, ensuring security and stability in the region.
