The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday criticised petitioners, urging the intervention of the United Nations in Farmers’ Protest case. The Court was hearing two PILs related to farmers’ protest, the one associated with suspension of internet and sealing of borders, and the other challenging the blockades on roads by protestors.
The bench consisting Acting Chief Justice GS Sandhawalia and Justice Lapita Banerji called it ‘unfair’ that the petitioners took the issue to the UN “You brought it to us, and we took it up. Once you have invoked the jurisdiction of this court, how can you take it to the UN,” they asked.
The case has now been adjourned for hearing till February 20. Petitioners had stated in the last hearing that the law enforcements are stopping the farmers from protesting and has blocked the borders. They said that nails and barriers are put up on the roads to stop the farmers. Citing that Bharat is a democratic nation, the petitioners said that blocking the protestors can’t be allowed.
According to the petitioners, Farmers are allowed to move freely anywhere in the country and that right to protest has been upheld by the Supreme Court in various cases.
The other petition stated that because the farmers are moving towards Delhi, in thousands of vehicles, nobody should be allowed to block the national highway and disrupt daily lives. It is to be noted here, that the Farmers’ protest is affecting the common people, causing suffering to public life.
