More than 250 government buses and 400 private buses halted their operations on Friday owing to the Bharat Bandh, leaving passengers stuck.
Farmer groups, including the Bharti Kisan Union (Rajewal), Bharatiya Kisan Union (Dakaunda), Bharatiya Kisan Union (Lakhowal), Bharatiya Kisan Union (Qadian) and Kirti Kisan Union are holding the ‘bandh’.
Authorities aware of the matter revealed that a majority of buses retreated owing to the widespread protests and road blockages across districts. Adding fuel to the chaos, several trade unions also staged demonstrations at bus stands.
Speaking to the reporters,a frustrated commuter, Jagjit Singh said, I urgently needed to travel to Ferozepur to meet relatives who are scheduled to depart abroad tomorrow. However, upon arriving at the bus stand this morning, I was dismayed to find not a single bus operating due to the Bharat Bandh.”
The General manager of Punjab Roadways informed that four buses which were dispatched towards various destinations, namely, Rajkot, Ferozepur, Bathinda and Jalandhar, reportedly were forced to return amid road closures outside the district. Neither public, nor private buses were allowed to operate on their respective routes.
Authorities have informed that the buses will be able to resume their services on Saturday.
