Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf on Friday night announced that it will sit in opposition in the Centre and Punjab province as attempts to form the next government continue in the country.
The decision which came a day after Umar Ayub Khan was named as PTI’s candidate for Prime Ministership and Aslam Iqbal as chief minister for Punjab, was declared by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf’s legal aid Ali Saif.
Saif had told the media that the party decided to sit in the opposition, keeping in mind that if the votes’ results were not tampered with then perhaps the PTI would have been in the Centre with 180 voted. “We have the evidence that our candidates won,” Saif said.
In the recently finished Pakistan Elections, Independent Candidates backed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf won 93 of the 265 National Assembly seats.
Former Pakistan prime Minister Nawaz Sharif-led PML-N won 75 seats while Bilawal Bhutto-Zardaari’s Pakistan People’s Party was in the third position with 54 seats.
Both PML-N and PPP then announced an alliance post the elections. Another party Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) who won 17 seats also joined the former two to form a government.
Notably, to form a government in Pakistan, a party must win 133 seats of 265 seats which are contested of the the total 266-member National Assembly.
