Despite government’s concerted efforts, the farmers’ agitation continues to dwindle peace and reach a solution. In the latest agitators have threatened the government with consequences if their demands are not met ‘unconditionally’. The protestors rejected Centre’s proposal to procure pulses, maize and cotton at MSP, and farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher has said that BJP led government that it will be responsible, ‘for whatever happens’.
During the fourth round of discussions with farmer leaders, a trio of Union ministers presented a proposal on Sunday suggesting the government’s procurement of pulses, maize, and cotton crops at minimum support prices (MSP) for a duration of five years.
However, on Monday, the protesting farmers rejected the government’s proposition, asserting that it aims to “divert and dilute” their demand for MSP. They emphasized their insistence on nothing less than what was advocated by the Swaminathan Commission report. Pandher, stated yesterday that the government should permit their journey to Delhi.
The farmers are adamant about the government enacting a law to establish minimum support prices for all crops, while the government argues that implementing MSP on all crops would impose a heavy burden on the national exchequer.
Furthermore, the protesters are calling for additional measures such as pension for farmers, debt waiver, and the reinstatement of the 2013 Land Acquisition Act, among other demands.
