Authorities have tightened security measures in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal, as senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari prepares for a visit to the area. Section 144 has been imposed at five new locations in anticipation of potential unrest, as reported by News18.
The protests in Sandeshkhali stem from demands for the arrest of Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh. Allegations against Sheikh include involvement in a land ration scam and rape incidents, prompting public outcry and demonstrations.
Adhikari, ahead of his planned visit to the violence-affected area, expressed his intention to meet with the families of the victims. Despite previous attempts being thwarted by Section 144 restrictions, Adhikari remains determined to engage directly with those affected by the incidents.
In an interview with ANI on February 19, Adhikari revealed, “The permission was given on February 12 also but they imposed Section 144. Today, I received a specific order and go there tomorrow and meet the families of the victims.” He further emphasized his commitment to meeting not only the families of the victims but also BJP workers who have been arrested in connection with the events.
Since February 10, efforts have been underway to facilitate these meetings, with Adhikari expressing optimism about the possibility of engagement on his upcoming visit. The BJP leader’s determination to address the grievances of those affected underscores the significance of his visit to Sandeshkhali amidst the ongoing tensions.
The imposition of Section 144 reflects authorities’ concerns over potential disturbances and highlights the delicate situation in the region. As Adhikari prepares to navigate these challenges, his visit holds the promise of providing a platform for dialogue and resolution in the midst of heightened tensions.
