The European Union (EU) has decided to start talks with Japan to create a special agreement on security and defense. This is to make their relationship stronger, especially with concerns about China’s actions in the sea. The EU and Japan want to work together more closely on things like protecting the seas, sharing important information, and dealing with new kinds of attacks that mix military and non-military tactics.
The idea for this agreement came after Japan and the EU promised to work more on security during a meeting last July. They’re worried about China’s growing power in the East and South China seas. The EU document called Japan a very important partner in the Indo-Pacific region. They’ve been working together on peace, security, and defense for many years, and they want to make their partnership even stronger now.
The EU’s Foreign Affairs Council meeting talked about how important it is for the EU and Japan to work together more closely. They have 14 areas where they might work together with Japan, and keeping the seas safe is one of the most important ones. They’re thinking about doing exercises together in the Indo-Pacific area and helping countries in Southeast Asia with their maritime security.
Besides maritime security, the EU and Japan want to join forces against cyber threats, protect important buildings and systems, and work together against terrorism. They also plan to cooperate in space security and defense.
At their summit last year, the EU leaders talked about how crucial the East and South China Seas are for peace and prosperity in the region and the world. They’re worried about the situation in the Taiwan Strait getting worse. By deciding to make this security agreement, the EU shows that it’s serious about working with partners like Japan to keep the region safe and stable, especially with all the changes happening in the world.
