On Thursday, an avalanche struck the ski slopes of Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir, claiming the life of one skier and trapping several foreigners. The incident occurred in the Kongdoori slopes, where a number of foreigners had ventured without local residents.
Amidst continuous rainfall and snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir over the past few days, an avalanche warning had been issued. Five skiers have been successfully rescued and are currently receiving treatment in a local hospital. Rescue operations, conducted by personnel from the Army and a patrolling team of the Jammu and Kashmir administration, are underway.
The day before the incident, the J&K disaster management authority issued a new avalanche warning for the Union territory’s 10 districts. Anantnag and Kulgam were placed under a low-danger level warning, while Bandipora and Baramulla faced a medium-level avalanche warning for the following 24 hours.
Additionally, a high danger level warning was issued for areas above 2200 meters in Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, Ramban, Kupwara, and Ganderbal districts. The advisory emphasized the need for residents in these areas to exercise caution, avoid venturing into avalanche-prone areas, and take necessary precautions.
