The Biden administration has issued a stern warning to Iran following reports that the Islamic Republic has provided ballistic missiles to Russia. The White House National Security spokesperson, John Kirby, emphasized that if Tehran indeed transferred such weapons, it would face a swift and severe response from the international community.
According to news, Iran allegedly supplied Russia with a significant number of surface-to-surface ballistic missiles, including those from the Fateh-110 family. These missiles, like the Zolfaghar, possess the capability to strike targets at distances ranging from 300 km to 700 km.
The reported shipment of around 400 missiles indicates a deepening military cooperation between Iran and Russia, both of which are under sanctions from the United States. The deliveries allegedly began in early January after a finalized deal between Iranian and Russian military and security officials.
While there is yet to be official confirmation of the missile transfers, the Biden administration is taking the matter seriously. Kirby mentioned that the U.S. would bring the issue to the UN Security Council, implement additional sanctions against Iran, and coordinate further response options with allies and partners in Europe and elsewhere.
Iran’s support for Russia’s actions in Ukraine, including supplying drones and other military equipment, has raised concerns. The provision of ballistic missiles would signify an escalation in their cooperation, potentially leading to more severe consequences for Iran.
Despite the expiration of UN Security Council restrictions on Iran’s export of certain missiles and drones last October, the United States and European Union have maintained sanctions on Iran’s ballistic missile program. This is due to concerns over Iran’s support for proxy groups in the Middle East and the possibility of weapons exports to Russia.
The Biden administration’s warning underscores the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the need for Iran to refrain from actions that could escalate tensions further.
