Bharat’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, has cautioned against what he describes as China’s strategy of solely focusing on bilateral dynamics in their relationship. Speaking at the Raisina Dialogue 2024, Jaishankar emphasized the importance of not neglecting Bharat’s rights to leverage other global factors to achieve a better balance in the relationship.

He highlighted China’s earlier and more intense economic expansion compared to Bharat’s more recent growth trajectory. Jaishankar noted that while China may be currently ahead, economic projections suggest that both nations could have $50 trillion economies by 2075, indicating a convergence in their economic standings over time.

Concerns Over Border Tensions and Departure from Mutual Understanding

Jaishankar pointed out the border issue as a significant factor contributing to tensions between Bharat and China. He referenced an understanding established in the late 1980s, which has seen a departure from China’s side in recent years, leading to heightened tensions and resistance from Bharat.

The minister highlighted instances where one country might attempt to exploit advantages, leading to pushback from the other. He specifically mentioned China’s behavior regarding the border issue as a departure from the established understanding, resulting in Bharat’s necessary response.

Emphasizing the Need for External Factors in Bilateral Relationships

Addressing the complexities of maintaining equilibrium in the relationship, Jaishankar stressed the importance of not limiting the scope to bilateral dynamics alone. He expressed the view that leveraging external factors could lead to more favorable terms for Bharat in its relationship with China.

Jaishankar cautioned against falling into the trap of solely focusing on bilateral issues while ignoring the influence of other global players. He argued that Bharat should utilize all available means to ensure a balanced relationship with China, even if it means considering external factors beyond the two countries.

In conclusion, Jaishankar’s remarks underscore the nuanced nature of Bharat-China relations and the importance of considering broader geopolitical factors in shaping their future dynamics. As both countries navigate their respective growth trajectories, the need for a balanced and pragmatic approach becomes increasingly vital to ensure stability and mutual understanding.
