Speaking to ANI during the Raisina Dialogue 2024, Minister Karins underscored Latvia’s substantial assistance to Ukraine, spanning from weapons provision to humanitarian aid and financial support. He emphasized that Latvia’s aid encompasses both governmental efforts and contributions from civil society organizations.
Karins highlighted Latvia’s significant allocation of approximately 1% of its GDP towards aiding the war-torn nation, emphasizing that support extends beyond mere financial assistance. He detailed the diverse range of contributions, including the provision of ambulances, school buses, medical equipment, drones, and monetary donations from various segments of Latvian society. The minister stressed that this collective effort reflects a recognition among Latvians that Ukraine’s struggle against aggression resonates with their own history and values.
Expressing concern over Ukraine’s challenges, particularly in accessing weapons and ammunition, Minister Karins reassured that once necessary supplies arrive, Ukraine’s capacity to reclaim its territories would be revitalized. Despite acknowledging the difficulty in predicting the conflict’s resolution, he advocated for a robust long-term deterrence strategy against Russian aggression, urging NATO and European nations to bolster their military capabilities.
Karins extended appreciation for India’s potential role in influencing Russia to cease hostilities and called for increased financial and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.
