United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has reiterated the importance of upholding Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity. Speaking at a UN Security Council session marking the second anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Guterres emphasized the violation of international law by Russia’s actions.
Guterres stressed that the invasion directly contravened the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law. He highlighted the suffering of civilians on both sides of the conflict and called for a just peace based on these fundamental principles.
Expressing deep concern over the potential escalation of the conflict, Guterres warned of its geopolitical ramifications, stating that it was exacerbating regional instability and hindering efforts to address other global issues.
The Secretary-General condemned the two years of fighting and suffering since the invasion began, asserting the urgent need to honor the UN Charter as a solution to the ongoing crisis.
International Community Calls for Russian Withdrawal
In a joint statement, 50 UN member states, including the US, Japan, South Korea, and the European Union, called for Russia to immediately withdraw from Ukraine. They also urged countries like North Korea to cease providing weapons to Moscow. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba read out the statement at the UN headquarters in New York.
Leaders from around the world have begun arriving in Kyiv to commemorate the second anniversary of the conflict. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed steadfast support for Ukraine, announcing a ban on exporting goods to Russia that could be used for weapons production.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen affirmed the EU’s unwavering support for Ukraine, pledging financial, economic, military, and moral assistance until the country achieves freedom.
