In a heartwarming gesture ahead of Ramadan, a UAE-based Bharatiya businessman and philanthropist, Firoz Merchant, has extended a helping hand by donating 1 million dirhams (approximately INR 2.5 crore). This generous contribution aims to secure the release of 900 prisoners from jails across the Gulf nation. Merchant, aged 66 and owner of Pure Gold Jewellers, sees this act as a reflection of the values upheld during the holy month – humility, humanity, forgiveness, and kindness.
Under the banner of The Forgotten Society initiative, established in 2008, Firoz Merchant has been actively involved in securing the release of prisoners in the UAE. Since the start of 2024, he has already played a pivotal role in freeing 900 inmates from various jails, including those in Ajman, Fujairah, Dubai, Umm Al Quwain, and Ras Al Khaimah. Over the years, in collaboration with the Director Generals of Police at Central Jails across the UAE, Merchant has facilitated the release of over 20,000 prisoners from diverse backgrounds.
Merchant’s mission is driven by compassion and a desire to promote tolerance and forgiveness in society. He not only pays off the debts of the prisoners but also ensures they have the means to return home by covering the cost of their air tickets. His ultimate aim is to help more than 3,000 prisoners regain their freedom in 2024. His efforts have garnered recognition from the rulers of the UAE, as well as appreciation from senior government officials, who commend his kindness, forgiveness, and generosity.
Colonel Mohammed Yusuf Al-Matrooshi, Deputy Director of the General Administration of Punitive and Correctional Establishments in Ajman, lauds Merchant’s unwavering commitment to prisoner rehabilitation. He highlights the rarity of such dedication and concern towards those incarcerated, emphasizing the profound impact Merchant’s actions have on the lives of thousands. Al-Matrooshi also praises the discreet manner in which Merchant operates, providing genuine hope to individuals trapped behind bars due to financial constraints.
Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with government authorities, Merchant emphasizes the universal nature of compassion, transcending borders and affiliations. He reiterates the core mission of The Forgotten Society initiative – to facilitate reconciliation between prisoners and their families, allowing them to reintegrate into society upon their return to their home countries. Through his actions, Merchant exemplifies the spirit of empathy and solidarity, embodying the values of Ramadan and the broader principles of humanity.
