Bharat and Oman engaged in their ninth edition of strategic dialogue in Muscat on February 26, with discussions encompassing regional security dynamics, particularly in light of the Gaza conflict, and bilateral cooperation initiatives. Led by Bharat’s deputy national security adviser Vikram Misri, the dialogue aimed to foster frank and constructive exchanges on pertinent issues affecting both nations.
Participants, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that the dialogue addressed regional security concerns stemming from the Gaza conflict, with particular attention to the Red Sea, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, and the broader Middle East. This candid exchange underscored the shared commitment of Bharat and Oman to navigate regional challenges effectively.
One of the focal points of the dialogue was the advancement of a comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) between Bharat and Oman. Both sides acknowledged the progress made in negotiations and highlighted the mutual benefits of expeditiously finalizing the trade deal. The CEPA is poised to bolster economic ties and enhance cooperation across various sectors.
Furthermore, the dialogue delved into existing bilateral issues where consensus had been reached, with a pledge to diligently follow up on agreed-upon measures while identifying new avenues for collaboration. Areas of discussion included strategic, military, and security cooperation, alongside partnerships in disaster management, oceanography, and artificial intelligence.
Emphasizing the historical bonds between the two nations, participants noted the positive impact of people-to-people interactions. Bharat expressed gratitude to Oman for hosting a significant Indian expatriate community whose contributions have played a vital role in the socio-economic development of the Gulf nation.
Both sides reaffirmed their enduring commitment to fostering robust ties and pledged to sustain high levels of cooperation across various domains. Misri, in a meeting with Gen Sultan bin Mohammed Al Nomani, the minister of the royal office, conveyed appreciation for Oman’s collaboration and expressed optimism for further strengthening bilateral relations.
Bharat also extended gratitude to Oman for its support and participation in the successful organization of the G20 Summit held in New Delhi the previous year. Despite disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the dialogue highlighted significant progress achieved since the last meeting in 2023, underscoring the shared aspiration to maintain this momentum.
Looking ahead, both nations agreed to convene the next round of strategic dialogue in New Delhi the following year, underscoring their commitment to regular engagement and the advancement of mutual interests.
