Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma projected that only a handful of Muslim MLAs would remain in the Congress party by the time the 2026 Assembly elections roll around.

“Certain Congress MLAs such as Rakibul Hussain, Rekibuddin Ahmed, Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Nurul Huda, and a few others will persist within the party,” remarked CM Himanta while addressing reporters during an event in Bishwanath district’s Gohpur.

Responding to queries about the potential shift of Congress leader Rana Goswami to BJP, the CM stated, “I am not privy to such information. If he decides to join BJP, being a formidable Congress leader, his inclusion would be welcomed.”

CM Himanta stressed the multifaceted considerations politicians must ponder before making decisions.

Supporting the CM’s stance, State Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika noted, “Apart from the individuals I mentioned, most other Congress leaders and MLAs are in contact with us.”

Earlier, Assam Pradesh Congress chief Bhupen Borah accused CM Himanta of apprehension towards him, citing alleged vindictive actions, including the transfer of his brother and sister-in-law, both government employees, to distant corners of the State.

Borah expressed discontent over the lack of increased security following an assault he endured during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in January, further alleging accused remained at large.

Slamming the Congress leader for his accusations, Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika stated, “Just because they happen to be relatives of some big Congress leader, doesn’t mean they will get special treatment.”
