In a recent social media post, the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s West Bengal unit and leader of the opposition in the legislative assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, made startling allegations regarding Sheikh Shahjahan, a prominent figure within the All India Trinamool Congress (AITMC). Adhikari asserted that Shahjahan, accused in the Sandeshkhali sexual exploitation and land grab cases and currently on the run following an attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials, is allegedly under the safe custody of the state police.
According to Adhikari’s claims, Shahjahan was purportedly apprehended by the police from the Bermajur – II Gram Panchayat area. However, Adhikari alleges that Shahjahan negotiated a deal through influential mediators, ensuring that he would be well taken care of while in police and judicial custody. The BJP leader further contended that Shahjahan would receive luxurious treatment, including 5-star facilities, during his time behind bars.

Known as ‘Betaj Badshah’, Shahjahan Sheikh wields significant influence in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali region, adjacent to the Bangladesh border. Numerous women have come forward, accusing him and his associates of sexual abuse and intimidation. Victims have described harrowing experiences, alleging captivity and exploitation by Shahjahan and his cohorts. Despite mounting protests and complaints, Shahjahan has remained elusive, evading arrest.
Mamata Banerjee’s administration has faced criticism for its perceived inaction in apprehending Shahjahan, a key figure within her party. The Block Development Officer (BDO) has reportedly received over 700 complaints against Shahjahan in connection with recent atrocities committed against villagers. Additionally, Shahjahan is implicated in orchestrating the assault on ED officials conducting a raid at his residence as part of an investigation into a ration scam.
The allegations raised by Suvendu Adhikari have stirred controversy and raised questions about the efficacy of law enforcement in addressing cases of political influence and criminal activity. With Shahjahan’s whereabouts still uncertain and accusations of preferential treatment by the police, the situation continues to escalate, fueling tensions between political factions and underscoring broader concerns about governance and accountability in West Bengal.
