In a major breakthrough, main accused in Sandeshkhali violence case, Sheikh Shahjahan has finally been arrested by the police. The TMC leader and his associates have been of sexual atrocities against women and land grabbing in the Sandeshkhali region. Shahjahan was taken into custody by a special Bengal police team in the North 24 Parganas district around midnight after being on the run for 55 days. Following the arrest, he was brought to the Basirhat court.
Authorities had been closely monitoring the leader’s activities for several days leading up to the arrest. The development comes three days after the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court ordered Sheikh Shahjahan to be included in the Sandeshkhali case.
On February 26, the Calcutta High Court Justice issued a notice in the case, stating, “There is no reason not to arrest him.” The court emphasized that public notice should be given in this case and clarified that there is no stay order in Sandeshkhali cases.
The Sandeshkhali area in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district has been witnessing widespread protests against Trinamool Congress strongman Shahjahan Sheikh. A group of women has been demanding justice against the alleged atrocities committed by the TMC leader.
