Prime Minister Narendra Modi has strongly criticized the Trinamool Congress party over the Sandeshkhali issue. He accused the party of protecting its leader, Sheikh Shahjahan, who has been arrested amidst allegations of sexual assault and land grab. PM Modi addressed the matter during an event in West Bengal’s Arambagh, where he questioned the priorities of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, suggesting that the suffering of women seemed less important than political considerations.
Referring to the Trinamool Congress’ slogan ‘Maa, Maati, Manush’ (Mother, Land, and People), PM Modi expressed dismay over the actions of the party, stating that the situation in Sandeshkhali contradicted their proclaimed values. He emphasized the plight of women in the region and criticized Mamata Banerjee’s government for allegedly shielding Shahjahan despite complaints.
PM Modi highlighted the efforts of BJP leaders in advocating for the victims and pressuring authorities to take action. He condemned the silence of opposition leaders belonging to the INDIA alliance on the issue, likening their inaction to Gandhi’s three monkeys, who see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil.
PM Modi Criticizes INDIA Alliance’s Silence and Congress’s Response
In his address, PM Modi also criticized the leaders of the INDIA alliance for their lack of response to the Sandeshkhali scandal. He questioned their meetings and gatherings in various cities but noted a failure to confront Mamata Banerjee’s government regarding the issue. The PM specifically mentioned the Congress leader’s remark, implying an insensitive attitude towards the situation in Bengal.
Accusing the Congress and the INDIA alliance of supporting corruption and dynastic politics, PM Modi reiterated his stance against their ideologies. He portrayed their actions as contrary to the interests of the people and traditions of West Bengal.
Background and Arrest of Trinamool Leader
The controversy surrounding Sheikh Shahjahan, a prominent Trinamool figure, erupted after allegations of sexual assault and land grab surfaced in Sandeshkhali. Shahjahan had been evading authorities since an incident involving an Enforcement Directorate team in January. However, following pressure from various quarters, including BJP leaders, he was arrested on Thursday.
The arrest came in connection with a mob attack on the Enforcement Directorate team. The Calcutta High Court had previously criticized the Bengal police for failing to apprehend Shahjahan promptly. Following his arrest, the Trinamool Congress suspended him from the party for six years.
The situation has brought attention to the dynamics of politics in West Bengal ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, with PM Modi’s remarks adding fuel to the ongoing debate over governance and accountability in the state.
