The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has recently issued fresh summons to Mahua Moitra, a Trinamool Congress leader and former Lok Sabha MP. The summons are related to a case involving contravention of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) and require Moitra to appear for questioning on March 11. Official sources disclosed this development on March 4.
Reportedly, Moitra, aged 49, had requested a few weeks to join the investigation and conveyed her inability to depose before the agency last month. However, the ED has now mandated her appearance at their office in Delhi on the aforementioned date.
The federal probe agency aims to interrogate Moitra and record her statement under FEMA provisions once she complies with the summons. Transactions associated with a non-resident external (NRE) account, along with other foreign remittances and fund transfers, are under scrutiny in this case, according to the sources.
In addition to the ED’s inquiry, Moitra is also under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The CBI’s preliminary inquiry stems from allegations against Moitra, who was expelled a few months ago, based on a reference from the Lokpal.
The accusations against Moitra surfaced when BJP MP Nishikant Dubey accused her of targeting the Adani group and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during her tenure in the Lok Sabha. Dubey claimed that Moitra’s actions were influenced by businessman Darshan Hiranandani, alleging that she received gifts in exchange for her efforts. Furthermore, he accused her of jeopardizing national security for monetary gains.
Moitra, however, has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, asserting that she is being targeted due to her scrutiny of the Adani group’s dealings. She maintains that her questions in Parliament were motivated solely by her duty as a lawmaker to hold entities accountable.
The developments surrounding Moitra’s summons have stirred public interest, raising questions about the intersection of politics, business, and legal accountability within India’s governance framework. As the investigation progresses, further revelations may emerge regarding the allegations and their implications for Moitra’s political career and the broader political landscape.
