Bengaluru is facing a severe water crisis due to declining groundwater levels and a drought in the Cauvery basin. In response to this, Tejasvi Surya, a Member of Parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has issued a warning of protests in front of Vidhana Soudha if the Congress government in Karnataka fails to address the drinking water crisis in the city.
Surya expressed his concern after meeting with Ram Prasath Manohar, the chairman of the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), discussing the ongoing water crisis. He emphasized that if the issue is not resolved within a week, the Karnataka BJP leaders will lead protests at Vidhana Soudha.
In a statement, Surya criticized the government’s negligence, stating, “Despite being aware of the situation, the government failed to take precautionary measures, leading to the current tough water crisis faced by the people of Bengaluru.” He accused decision-makers of neglect and irresponsibility towards the city.
Taking to social media platform X, Surya also criticized the Siddaramaiah government for addressing the issue “unscientifically.” He offered seven suggestions to the BWSSB for a swift resolution:
1. Provide treated water for non-potable use in industries and the construction sector.
2. Redistribute drinking water to areas facing stress.
3. Divert about 1,300 MLD of treated water to recharge aquifers in lakes.
4. Consult geologists to identify locations for new borewells.
5. Redrill or flush existing borewells with reduced yields.
6. Efficiently manage water distribution through water tankers without disrupting existing contractual supplies.
7. Expedite the completion of Cauvery Stage-5 to address water availability in proposed regions.
Surya warned that if these measures are not implemented within a week, the BJP will lead protests, demanding urgent action to meet the pressing needs of the people.
