Bharat’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, highlighted the importance of revitalizing the partnership between India and Japan as the two nations mark the 10th anniversary of their special strategic and global partnership. The remarks were made during the 16th India-Japan Foreign Ministers Strategic Dialogue held in Tokyo, where Jaishankar met with his Japanese counterpart, Yoko Kamikawa.
Expressing gratitude for the warm hospitality, Jaishankar began by offering condolences for recent losses and destruction. He emphasized Japan’s role as a natural partner in India’s journey of development and transformation, as well as in the pursuit of peace, prosperity, and stability.
Jaishankar underscored the significance of 2023 as a “landmark” year in Bharat-Japan bilateral relations, citing thriving exchanges between governments, businesses, and people across various sectors. He particularly highlighted the meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Kishida in Delhi in March, along with Japan’s cooperation during its successful G20 presidency.
As both nations navigate the 10th year of their special strategic and global partnership, Jaishankar stressed the need for finding innovative avenues to enhance collaboration and inject fresh momentum into the existing partnership. He expressed eagerness to discuss progress and chart out further steps during the talks.
Prior to the dialogue, Jaishankar met with Taro Aso, Vice President of the Liberal Democratic Party, for a wide-ranging conversation covering politics, security, and economic issues. Jaishankar appreciated Aso’s strong support for the India-Japan strategic partnership.
Jaishankar’s visit to Japan from March 6-8 follows his recent trip to South Korea, where he engaged with top leaders during his stay. The series of diplomatic engagements underscores India’s commitment to strengthening ties with key partners in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
