The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is reportedly considering the nomination of renowned cricketer Mohammad Shami from Bengal in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, sources disclosed. Shami, who represents Bengal in the Ranji Trophy and continues to contribute to domestic cricket, has been approached by the BJP leadership with the proposal. However, the cricketer is yet to finalize his decision, currently on a break to recuperate from recent surgery.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his wishes for Shami’s speedy recovery following the pacer’s confirmation of undergoing surgery. Shami has been out of action since his remarkable performance during Bharat’s ODI World Cup campaign, where he notably took 24 wickets in seven matches with outstanding averages and strike rates.
After Bharat’s loss in the World Cup finals against Australia, PM Modi personally met with the players to console them. He particularly praised Mohammad Shami for his stellar performance in the tournament, which garnered attention after a heartwarming embrace between the two was captured in a viral video from the cricket team’s dressing room.
In addition to PM Modi’s acknowledgment, Shami also met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Furthermore, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced plans for the construction of a cricket stadium in Shami’s native village in Amroha, emphasizing the recognition and support Shami has garnered.
According to top BJP sources, Shami’s candidacy for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal has been proposed, with discussions showing positive momentum. It is believed within the BJP that fielding Shami could prove advantageous in securing victories in minority-dominated constituencies in Bengal. The party’s primary focus is reportedly on nominating Shami from the Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency, which has been in the spotlight due to recent incidents of violence in Sandeshkhali village within its boundaries.
The potential nomination of Mohammad Shami represents a strategic move by the BJP to leverage his popularity and influence in Bengal’s political landscape. Shami’s achievements in cricket, coupled with his wide-ranging appeal, could significantly impact the electoral dynamics in the region. As discussions progress and Shami weighs his options, all eyes remain on the unfolding developments leading up to the Lok Sabha polls.
