On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the significance of having a home in ensuring dignity and empowerment for women. He emphasized this point while commemorating the day on Friday, stating that a home serves as the foundation for dignity and the starting point for empowerment.
PM Modi pointed out that the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), also known as PM-AWAS Yojana, has played a crucial role in further empowering women. He described the scheme as a “game-changer” in this regard, acknowledging its impact on enhancing the lives of women across the country.
In a post on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi shared a touching story of a beneficiary of the PMAY scheme. Urmila Devi, one such beneficiary, expressed her gratitude for receiving a home for her family through the initiative. She recounted the challenges her family faced due to inadequate housing conditions, expressing relief and happiness at finally having a secure and permanent residence.
A home is the foundation of dignity. It's where empowerment begins and dreams take flight.

Urmila Devi’s husband, Amit Kumar Gautham, also shared his thoughts on the scheme, highlighting the significance of his wife being the owner of the house under PMAY. He expressed joy at the prospect of his children living without fear under sturdy roofs, now that they have a new and safe home.
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) Mission was launched in June 2015 with the aim of providing housing for all in urban areas by 2022. In August 2022, the Union Cabinet approved its continuation until December 31, 2024, excluding the Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS). This extension aims to complete already sanctioned houses by March 31, 2022.
The PMAY-U is a flagship program implemented by the Government of India under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). It provides Central Assistance to implementing agencies through States/Union Territories (UTs) and Central Nodal Agencies (CNAs) to fulfill the housing needs of eligible families.
A notable feature of PMAY-U is its focus on empowering women from economically weaker sections (EWS) and low-income groups (LIG). Unlike previous schemes, PMAY (U) mandates that the female head of the family must be the owner or co-owner of the house under this mission, further promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment.
In conclusion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on the role of homes in empowering women underscores the government’s commitment to providing secure and dignified housing for all citizens, particularly women. The success stories of beneficiaries like Urmila Devi highlight the transformative impact of initiatives like PMAY in improving the lives of millions across the country.
