Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his two-day visit to Assam, made a special stop at a tea estate, taking time to appreciate the beauty and importance of the State’s renowned tea gardens.
PM Modi explored the splendid tea gardens, commending the tea garden community for their contribution in showcasing Assam’s pride, its tea, to the global stage.
“Assam is renowned for its breathtaking tea gardens, and Assam Tea has made its mark worldwide,” he remarked in a social media post, praising the tireless efforts of the tea garden community in elevating the State’s reputation globally.
Encouraging tourists to explore these picturesque tea gardens during their visits to the State, PM Modi highlighted the unique experiences that await visitors. Assam, producing nearly 700 million kg of tea yearly and contributing to half of Bharat’s tea production, has witnessed a significant transformation in its tea plantation sector.
Thousands of small farmers have embraced tea cultivation, with unemployed youths finding opportunities in the industry, some even venturing into backyard cultivation and entrepreneurial endeavours.
Tea plantation stays, golfing amidst lush green estates, and scenic drives through the tea gardens offer unforgettable experiences for visitors. With historic tea estates dating back to 1823, Assam boasts charming old-world bungalows and golf courses, some even equipped with airstrips for convenient access.
Celebrating 200 years of tea plantation industry milestones, Assam continues to be globally renowned for its aromatic Orthodox and CTC varieties of tea, tracing its roots to Robert Bruce’s discovery of wild tea plants in the upper Brahmaputra Valley.
Today, Assam’s tea industry not only sustains millions of livelihoods but also contributes significantly to the State’s economy, generating annual foreign exchange earnings of approximately Rs 3,000 crore. As Assam’s tea story continues to evolve, its tea gardens remain an integral part of the State’s cultural heritage and economic prosperity.
