Prime Minister Narendra Modi has kicked off a series of groundbreaking initiatives aimed at transforming the northeastern region of Bharat. In a grand event held in Arunachal Pradesh’s capital Itanagar, the PM inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for numerous projects valued at nearly Rs. 55,000 crore. Among the key projects inaugurated is the strategically significant Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh, constructed by the Border Roads Organisation at a cost of Rs. 825 crore. This tunnel, considered the world’s longest twin-lane tunnel, is situated at an altitude of over 13,000 feet.
Designed to enhance the movement of soldiers, equipment, and heavy vehicles, particularly near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Tawang sector, the Sela Tunnel is a pivotal infrastructure development for the region.
The occasion witnessed the presence of notable dignitaries including Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Governor KT Parnaik, and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi emphasized his government’s commitment to prioritizing national interests over political considerations, criticizing past Congress administrations for neglecting the northeastern region’s development. He highlighted the disparity in infrastructure investment, asserting that his government has allocated nearly four times more funds for the region’s development in the last five years compared to previous administrations.
Furthermore, the PM inaugurated the groundbreaking ceremony for the 2880 MW Dibang multipurpose hydropower project, the highest dam structure in Bharat, with an estimated cost of Rs. 31,876 crore. This project holds immense potential to bolster the region’s energy infrastructure and contribute to its economic growth.
In addition to these landmark projects, PM Modi launched the UNNATI (Uttar Poorva Transformative Industrialization) scheme, a Rs. 10,000 crore initiative aimed at fostering industrial development in the northeast. The scheme is expected to attract new investments, promote the establishment of manufacturing and service units, and generate employment opportunities, thereby catalyzing the region’s socio-economic progress.
The event also witnessed the virtual inauguration and foundation laying of projects worth significant amounts in Manipur, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Sikkim, and Tripura. These projects span various sectors including transportation, healthcare, education, border infrastructure, and more, demonstrating the government’s comprehensive approach towards holistic development in the northeastern states.
In Tripura, PM Modi laid the foundation stones for the Agartala Western Bypass and multiple road projects, inaugurated a new depot of Indian Oil Corporation, and launched projects aimed at rural development and improving connectivity along the India-Bangladesh border.
The PM’s visit to the northeastern region underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to accelerating growth and prosperity in this strategically vital part of the country. As he continues to unveil transformative initiatives, the region is poised to witness a new era of development and progress under his visionary leadership.
