Torrential rains have unleashed havoc on Indonesia’s Sumatra island, leading to flash floods and a devastating landslide that have claimed the lives of at least 10 individuals, with 10 others reported missing. The calamity struck the Pesisir Selatan district of West Sumatra province, as tons of mud, rocks, and uprooted trees cascaded down a mountain late Friday. The raging torrent reached a river, causing it to overflow and engulf mountainside villages.
Doni Yusrizal, the head of the local disaster management agency, provided grim details of the unfolding tragedy. He disclosed that rescuers recovered seven bodies from the worst-hit village of Koto XI Tarusan, while three others were found in neighboring settlements. Regrettably, the fate of ten individuals remains uncertain as they are still missing amidst the chaos.
The aftermath of the disaster has left a trail of destruction, with 46,000 people seeking refuge in temporary government shelters. The flood and landslide obliterated 14 houses, while a staggering 20,000 homes were submerged, their rooftops barely visible amid the deluge.
Yusrizal highlighted the challenges confronting relief efforts, citing power outages, blocked roads inundated with thick mud and debris. The treacherous conditions have impeded the search and rescue operations, prolonging the agony for those awaiting news of their missing loved ones.
