In a significant turn of events, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strategic diplomatic outreach, coupled with concerted efforts from various nations, has been credited with preventing Russia from a “potential nuclear attack” on Ukraine, according to a CNN report released on Saturday.
The report, citing insights from two senior officials, unveils that the United States had been actively preparing for a potential nuclear strike by Russia on Ukraine. This preparedness escalated as President Vladimir Putin’s army faced continuous setbacks on the battlefield. The report alleges that intervention from Prime Minister Modi, along with support from countries like China, may have been instrumental in dissuading Putin from executing the nuclear missile plan in 2022. The CNN report states, “US officials say that outreach and public statements from Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Bharatiya Prime Minister Narendra Modi helped avert a crisis.”
As Ukrainian forces closed in on Kherson, the report disclosed that entire Russian units were at risk of being surrounded. Simultaneously, Moscow allegedly suggested that Ukraine might resort to using a dirty bomb. Within the US administration, concerns grew that a devastating loss at Kherson could potentially trigger Russia to deploy nuclear weapons, with the dirty bomb claim serving as a potential cover for such an attack.
To prevent the crisis from escalating, the US sought support from non-allies, including Bharat to dissuade Russia from taking drastic measures. A senior US administration official revealed, “One of the things we did was not only message them directly but strongly urge, press, encourage other countries, to whom they might be more attentive, to do the same thing.”
The official acknowledged the impact of Bharat, China, and other countries weighing in on the situation, stating, “I think the fact that we know, India weighed in, China weighed in, others weighed in, may have had some effect on their thinking.”
It is noteworthy that Bharat has consistently condemned civilian killings and advocated for a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In a crucial moment during the SCO summit in Uzbekistan in September 2022, Prime Minister Modi conveyed to Putin that “this is not the era of war,” expressing a commitment to exploring paths towards peace
