At least 50 people were injured on Monday during a Chilean plane’s journey from Sydney to Auckland, New Zealand. Officials described the cause as a “strong movement” experienced mid-flight.
LATAM Airlines released a statement acknowledging the incident, stating that there was a “technical event” onboard leading to the strong movement. However, they did not provide further details regarding the nature of the event.
Upon landing in Auckland, paramedics were on standby to assist the passengers who were affected by the incident. Passengers received medical attention on the scene to address their injuries.
Around 50 individuals sustained mostly minor injuries, according to an ambulance spokesperson. Thirteen of those injured required further medical treatment at a hospital. One person was reported to be in serious condition.
The aircraft involved in the incident was identified as a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Despite the event, the flight landed at Auckland Airport according to schedule. It was intended to proceed with its journey to Santiago, Chile, after necessary checks and assessments.
