The Samyukta Kisan Morcha, an alliance of protesters groups, is organizing a ‘Kisan Mazdoor Mahapanchayat’ at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi. The aim is to pass a resolution to escalate their opposition against the central government’s policies. However, the Delhi Police has set conditions for the gathering. They have permitted a maximum of 5,000 participants and banned tractor trolleys near the venue.
Despite the restrictions, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha expects a significant turnout. More than 50,000 farmers from Punjab are anticipated to attend the event. Emphasizing peaceful assembly, the farmers’ umbrella body assures that it will be a non-violent gathering at Ramlila Ground.
In preparation for the event, protesters from Punjab have begun their journey towards Delhi. Over 800 buses, trucks, and several trains are transporting scores of farmers to the national capital. As a result, traffic disruptions are anticipated in various parts of Delhi.
Authorities are taking precautions to manage traffic and ensure public safety. The Gautam Buddh Nagar Police have warned commuters about potential delays on the Noida-Delhi routes due to the proposed protest. Additionally, heavy paramilitary deployment is observed at Delhi borders to prevent the ongoing farmers’ protest from reaching the city.
The Samyukta Kisan Morcha has secured approval from Delhi Police to conduct the mahapanchayat at Ramlila Maidan. Basic amenities like parking space, water, toilets, and ambulance services will be provided. However, the police have emphasized adherence to the agreed-upon conditions, including the prohibition of weapons and marches in Delhi.
Delhi Traffic Police issued advisories regarding the affected routes due to the farmers’ gathering. Several major roads including Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, Barakhamba Road, and Netaji Subhash Marg are likely to face disruptions. Commuters are advised to plan their travel accordingly and use alternative routes if necessary.
In response to the anticipated traffic congestion, diversions and intensive vehicle checks are planned near Delhi borders. The Gautam Buddh Nagar Police urge commuters to cooperate and utilize helpline numbers in case of inconvenience. They also caution against police interference with farmers’ travel plans.
Protesters groups from western Uttar Pradesh are expected to join the protest. Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait alleges attempts by authorities to deter farmers from participating. He warns against such actions and calls for uninterrupted participation in the Delhi gathering.
