This Day in The History | India’s First Woman Pilot Sarla Thakral’s Death Anniversary
On March 15, 2008, India lost its first female pilot, Sarla Thakral. At the tender age of 21, Sarla made history by taking to the skies. Her entry into the cockpit wearing a saree proved that the sky was open for women too. Despite preparing for her Group B license during the Second World War to pursue professional flight, civilian training was halted due to the war. Tragically, Sarla lost her husband in a plane crash later on. She remarried R.P. Thakral in 1948, and on March 15, 2008, she passed away.
