The Uttar Pradesh government, under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is set to change the names of eight railway stations in the Amethi district. This decision follows the approval of the state government’s proposal by the Union Home Ministry. Spearheaded by BJP Amethi Leader Smriti Irani, the move aims to preserve the cultural identity and heritage of Amethi.
Expressing satisfaction with the decision, Smriti Irani stated, “Virasat bhi, Vikas bhi,” indicating the importance of heritage alongside development. The proposal suggests substituting current names with those of temples, saints, idols, and freedom fighters, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of the region.
The renaming proposal, forwarded by the government on February 12, includes changing Kasimpur Halt to Jais City, Jais to Guru Gorakhnath Dham, Bani to Swami Paramhans, Misrauli to Maa Kalikan Dham, Nihalgarh to Maharaja Bijli Pasi, Akbarganj to Maa Ahorwa Bhawani Dham, Warisganj to Amar Shahid Bhale Sultan, and Fursatganj to Tapeshwarnath Dham.
Ram Prasad Mishra, district president of BJP’s Amethi unit, highlighted the long-standing demand for renaming railway stations after local entities. Mishra explained the rationale behind the proposed name changes, such as renaming Kasimpur Halt to Jais City due to its proximity to the predominantly Muslim-populated area.
Moreover, Mishra emphasized the religious significance of areas surrounding other railway stations, like Jais, Bani, Misrauli, Akbarganj, and Fursatganj, supporting the proposals for their renaming accordingly. He pointed out the religious and cultural significance of these areas, aligning with the government’s aim to promote religious tourism in Amethi.
The proposed renaming aims to align railway stations with the surrounding cultural and religious landscape, fostering a sense of local identity and heritage preservation. With plans for budget allocation soon, the government’s initiative reflects a broader strategy to promote tourism and cultural awareness in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi district.
