A devastating accident on Sunday morning shook the Grishk district of Helmand province in Afghanistan, leaving a trail of destruction and loss. According to reports, at least 21 individuals lost their lives, while 38 others sustained injuries in the heart-wrenching incident that occurred on the Herat-Kandahar highway.
The Information and Culture Directorate of Helmand Province revealed that the accident unfolded in the early hours of Sunday in the Yakhchal neighborhood of Grishk district. The collision involved a tanker, a motorcycle, and a passenger bus, leading to a catastrophic outcome.
As per the provincial information department’s statement posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the accident transpired when the bus driver lost control following a collision with the motorcycle. Subsequently, the bus collided with an oil tanker traveling in the opposite direction from Kandahar, exacerbating the severity of the tragedy.
The grim toll of the accident included the loss of 16 passengers aboard the bus, along with 2 individuals on the motorcycle and 3 occupants of the tanker. The magnitude of the casualties underscored the magnitude of the catastrophe that befell the community in Helmand province.
In the aftermath of the accident, all 38 injured individuals were swiftly transported to hospitals in both Grishk district and the provincial capital, Lashkargah City. Among the injured, 11 individuals were reported to be in critical condition, highlighting the urgent need for medical attention and support.
Authorities in Helmand province wasted no time in launching an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident. A traffic official confirmed that efforts were underway to ascertain the root causes of the accident, aiming to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
