In a move to stay ahead in modern warfare, the Bharatiya Army has announced the formation of a new elite unit called the Signals Technology Evaluation and Adaptation Group (STEAG). This unit will focus on researching and evaluating advanced communication technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), 5G, 6G, machine learning, and quantum technologies for military applications.
A senior officer emphasized the critical role of communications in military operations, stating that superior communication capabilities can provide a significant advantage on the battlefield. With warfare evolving rapidly, it is essential to incorporate new equipment and technologies to ensure seamless communication support for units and formations during operations.
STEAG, led by a Colonel-rank officer, aims to enhance the Army’s digital capabilities by harnessing cutting-edge technologies. It will focus on developing tailored solutions across wired and wireless systems, including electronic exchanges, mobile communications, software-defined radios, electronic warfare systems, and advanced networks like 5G and 6G.
The unit’s primary objective is to identify and adapt niche technologies for defense applications through collaboration with academia and industry partners. By fostering partnerships, STEAG intends to leverage the expertise of external stakeholders to develop innovative solutions suited for military needs.
STEAG will undertake various tasks, including technical scouting, evaluation, development, and management of core ICT solutions. Additionally, it will provide user interface support through the maintenance and upgrading of contemporary technologies. This comprehensive approach aims to bridge the gap between the armed forces, industry, and academia.
The establishment of STEAG signifies Bharat’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements in the military domain. By investing in research and development of futuristic communication technologies, the Bharatiya Army seeks to maintain its competitive edge and ensure the effectiveness of its operations in the digital age.
